A llaüt with a skipper around the Bay of Palma costs between €550 and €690 per group for half a day. It's the calmest boat for families or couples; what you need to scrutinise is what the price actually covers.

Llaüt hire in Mallorca isn't dominated by any one company: it's a handful of boats, each with its own skipper, sold through Civitatis, Viator, GetYourGuide and boat-hire portals. Our verdict: it's a very relaxed way to spend half a day at sea with children or with anyone prone to seasickness, as long as you get written confirmation of whether the price includes the skipper and fuel.

For

  • The boat is just for your group: no one else's music, no 100 strangers
  • Shaded deck and a stable hull: good for children and older travellers
  • Drinks, nibbles and snorkel gear are usually included
  • Departures from three different points around the bay

Against

  • Slow: not the boat for ticking off lots of coves in a short time
  • Few reviews per boat and hardly any have their own website
  • In some listings the skipper or fuel is paid separately
  • Expensive if there are only two of you

What a llaüt is

The llaüt is the traditional wooden boat of the Balearics, used for generations for fishing and carrying cargo between ports. Today it's a pleasure boat, and that has three consequences: it's slow (in half a day you see one stretch of coast, not half the island), it barely rolls (ideal if someone gets seasick) and it has a shaded deck. If you're after speed and water toys, the private boat in Palma guide suits you better; if you want to sail, see the sailing boat guide.

Which skippered llaüts leave from Palma

There's no company called "Mallorca Luxury Boat" behind Palma's llaüts, even though the name does the rounds. These are the boats you can actually book today, by name:

Boat / company Departs from Capacity Price What's included
Bona Vida Charter ("Charter Llaüts Mallorquins") Bay of Palma private group from €550 Water, soft drinks, alcohol, snorkelling, cured meats, cheese and pa amb tomàquet; the listing says the skipper is extra
Real Club Náutico llaüt (Civitatis) Real Club Náutico de Palma up to 5 €590 per group, 5 h English-speaking skipper, aperitif, 3 drinks per person, snorkel gear and paddleboard
Mar i Cel Can Pastilla up to 9 €690 per boat, half day Skipper, fuel, insurance, VAT, Mallorcan nibbles, soft drinks, wine and beer
Fenicia (built in 1977) Club de Mar up to 5 no euro price published Half day, full day or sunset; ask what's included

Bona Vida Charter

This is the operator behind the llaüt that Viator sells as "Charter Llaüts Mallorquins": from €550, 4–5 hours, rated 5.0 out of 5 from 20 reviews when we checked. It has no working website of its own. The same company offers the Bona Vida III at Club de Mar, a 9 m Majoni motorboat for 7 people, with a compulsory skipper paid per day and fuel on top (around 12 litres an hour). If you see the €550 price, ask how much the skipper adds.

The Real Club Náutico llaüt

Sold by Civitatis: €590 per group of up to 5, 5 hours. The meeting point is the San Telmo chapel, next to the entrance of the Real Club Náutico de Palma at the end of the Paseo Marítimo (the seafront avenue). Route: Cala Major with views of Marivent (30 min), an hour of swimming and snorkelling at Illetes, and back along the Punta Negra coast. Cocktails cost €12 extra. You can book up to 12 hours ahead; it isn't wheelchair accessible and pets are allowed.

Mar i Cel

A Can Pastilla llaüt with two slots, 10:00–14:00 or 16:00–20:00, at €690 per boat (advertised as a promotional price) for up to 9 people. It's the clearest of the lot: skipper, fuel, insurance and VAT included. For a group of 8 or 9 that's under €90 a head, drinks and nibbles included.

Fenicia and others

Fenicia is a classic 1977 llaüt that leaves from Club de Mar (Muelle de Pelaires, on the west side of the port) for a maximum of 5 people, for half a day, a full day or sunset. It has no published euro price: ask for it in writing before you book.

Outside Palma there's a crewed llaüt in Port d'Andratx (4 hours, with drinks, nibbles, paddleboard and snorkelling; no published euro price either) and Tomeu Charter's in Port d'Alcúdia, 11 m for 8 people, up in the north of the island.

Prices: direct vs platforms

None of them publishes a price on its own website, so the listing is what counts. What you need to compare is what each offer includes:

  • All-inclusive: Mar i Cel (€690) covers skipper, fuel, insurance and VAT.
  • Almost everything: the Civitatis llaüt (€590) includes skipper and drinks, but charges for cocktails.
  • Starting price: Bona Vida (€550) warns that the skipper isn't included.

On GetYourGuide there's a private traditional boat from €620 rated 5.0 out of 5, plus other skippered private boats worth a look if the llaüt doesn't suit you:

What travellers say

There are few reviews and all of them are very high: 5.0 from 20 reviews for Bona Vida's llaüt on Viator and 5.0 from 21 for GetYourGuide's traditional boat when we checked. With so few reviews there are no recurring complaints to highlight: take it as a good sign, not a guarantee.

Where they leave from and which route to choose

The departure point decides the route, because a llaüt is slow and every minute under way is a minute less swimming.

  • Club de Mar and Real Club Náutico (west side of the port): the natural route heads to Cala Major, Illetes and Portals Vells.
  • Can Pastilla: closer to Cala Blava and Cap Enderrocat, inside the bay's marine reserve.

At Cala Blava you can't anchor on the Posidonia seagrass: there's a buoy field (Cap Blanc–Cala Blava, 24 buoys) that you book on the day at reservas.portsib.es. More on the clubs in our guide to Palma's yacht clubs and on the piers in departures from Palma port.

How to book and cancel

On Civitatis the Real Club Náutico llaüt can be cancelled free of charge up to 48 hours before. On the other listings the policy depends on the portal and the boat: read it on each listing before paying. The wind is in charge: in the afternoon the embat (the south-westerly sea breeze) whips up waves in the bay, so the morning slot is usually calmer for swimming. If in doubt, see our guide to boating weather.

Alternatives to a llaüt

How much does it cost to hire a llaüt with a skipper in Mallorca?

In the Bay of Palma, between €550 and €690 per group for a half day of 4–5 hours. Mar i Cel charges €690 all-in for up to 9 people; the Real Club Náutico llaüt, €590 for up to 5.

What is a Mallorcan llaüt?

The traditional wooden boat of the Balearics, once used for fishing and carrying cargo. It's slow, stable and has a wide deck, usually with an awning.

Do you need a licence to go out on a llaüt?

Not if you hire it with a skipper. The skipper must hold a professional qualification and the boat must be registered for hire.

Does the company Mallorca Luxury Boat exist?

We found no company of that name behind Palma's llaüts. The llaüt sold as "Charter Llaüts Mallorquins" is offered by Bona Vida Charter, from €550.

Is fuel included?

It depends. Mar i Cel and the Civitatis llaüt include it; on skippered motorboats such as the Bona Vida III at Club de Mar it's paid separately. Always ask.
