The boat from Sóller to Sa Calobra is the most relaxed way to reach the mouth of the Torrent de Pareis: an hour along the Serra de Tramuntana coast, without the bends of the mountain road. It leaves from the Muelle Comercial (commercial quay) in Port de Sóller and is run by Barcos Azules (official website: barcoscalobra.com). There is no other known operator on the route: whether you buy on their website, at the ticket office or as part of an excursion, it is their boat. What almost nobody explains is the logic of the timetable: four departures, only two returns.

Sóller – Sa Calobra boat timetable and how to choose a sailing

From 1 April to 31 October the boat leaves Port de Sóller every day at 09:50, 11:20, 13:00 and 15:00. It comes back from Sa Calobra at 13:45 and 16:40, and that's it. With a crossing of about an hour, the sums work out like this:

Leaves Sóller Approx. arrival in Sa Calobra Possible return Approx. time ashore
09:50 10:50 13:45 about 3 hours
11:20 12:20 13:45 just under 1 h 30
11:20 12:20 16:40 about 4 hours
13:00 14:00 16:40 about 2 h 40
15:00 16:00 16:40 about 40 minutes

Our advice: 09:50 returning at 13:45 for a full morning and lunch in Port de Sóller, or 13:00 returning at 16:40 if you are coming by train from Palma (that is the combination used by the train + tram + boat packages). The 15:00 sailing only gives you time to see the beach at the mouth of the gorge.

Out of season

  • 1 to 21 November: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, departing 11:30 and returning 13:45.
  • February and March: Tuesday and Saturday, same times, and only if booked by phone.
  • 22 November to the end of January: no service.

The operator asks you to confirm the sailing the day before on +34 971 63 01 70. Up-to-date times and prices are on barcoscalobra.com.

Sa Calobra boat prices: official fares

Passenger Return Single
Adult €35 €23
Young person aged 12 to 22 €27 €16
Child aged 6 to 11 €18 €13
Resident adult €27 €16
Resident child €14 €8
Aged 0 to 5 free (with ticket) free
Bicycle €2 €1

Three details that save money:

  • Buy on the website before 20:00 the day before and you save 10%. Online the maximum is 10 tickets per order; at the ticket office there is no limit.
  • The youth fare (ages 12–22) is €27, eight euros less than the adult fare, and hardly anyone mentions it.
  • A bike costs €2 return. Many cyclists ride down to Sa Calobra by road and come back by boat to avoid the climb.

On GetYourGuide the same crossing is listed from €35, rated 4.4 from more than 1,200 reviews. It is the same boat; the difference is in the cancellation terms: on GetYourGuide free cancellation usually runs up to 24 hours before (check the listing), whereas the operator only refunds for free up to 3 days before.

How to book and board

  1. Book at reservas.barcoscalobra.com before 20:00 the day before for the 10% discount, or buy at the ticket office (Muelle Comercial, unit 2-3, 09:00–13:30 and 16:00–18:00).
  2. Bring photo ID; for the resident fare, your Spanish ID card.
  3. Be at the quay 15 minutes before departure.
  4. If you bought on your phone, exchange the ticket for a boarding card at the ticket office.

What to see in Sa Calobra: the Torrent de Pareis

From the Sa Calobra quay it is about 10 minutes on foot (around 1 km) to the beach where the Torrent de Pareis meets the sea. It is the walk almost everyone does and the reason for the trip: the gorge, a protected Natural Monument, has walls up to 200 metres high.

Don't confuse that walk with hiking up the gorge. Going up the Torrent de Pareis is a serious 4- to 5-hour route, only for experienced hikers, with sections that need a rope of about 10 metres. The operator says it is best from May to October. If you haven't prepared for it, stay at the mouth. More information on the operator's page about the Torrent de Pareis.

Cala Tuent and other boat trips from Port de Sóller

  • Cala Tuent: leaves Sóller at 09:50 and returns from Tuent at 16:50, a crossing of about 50 minutes, from 1 April to 31 October. Booking is required. The operator publishes €35 return (€23 single), but as fares from a previous season: confirm the price on its website. No lifeguard, sunbeds or beach bar; the Es Vergeret restaurant is 5–15 minutes' walk away. On GetYourGuide, from €35.
  • Sa Foradada: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 2 h 30, without going ashore and with one drink included.
  • Swim-and-slide trip – Sa Calobra and Cala Tuent: about 2 h 45 with a swimming stop of about 35 minutes from the boat, with a slide. Snorkelling gear, food and drink not included.

Speedboat

The best-rated trip on this list is the speedboat tour to Sa Calobra and Cala Tuent: 2 hours, from €49, rated 4.7 from more than 2,000 reviews. For a whole day on the water there is snorkelling and paddle boarding at Sa Calobra and Cala Tuent from €149; more ideas in snorkelling and SUP.

If you want to set foot on the Torrent de Pareis

2

Couples and small groups

Two hours by speedboat along the coast to Cala Tuent; the highest rating on the list.

3

A quiet beach day

Out in the morning, back at 16:50 and the whole day at Cala Tuent.

4

No car, from Palma

Train, tram and boat on one ticket; the same route as the train company's direct package.

Sea, wind and cancellations

The boat runs "weather permitting", and the operator does not publish how many days it cancels. The practical approach is to ring +34 971 63 01 70 the day before and check the sea again in the morning.

If the operator cancels because of bad weather, you choose a new date or a full refund, with no further compensation. If you cancel:

  • Free up to 3 days before.
  • With less than 24 hours' notice, 20% is charged; if you don't turn up, 100%. The booking system refunds nothing within those 3 days.
  • Tickets bought at the ticket office are non-refundable, and once a booking is confirmed the date cannot be changed.

If you get seasick easily, sit in the middle of the boat, on the lower open deck, and look at the horizon; avoid your phone, alcohol and heavy food before boarding. More on wind and seasons in our guide to the weather for boat trips.

Direct or on GetYourGuide

The train company links to tourmallorca.com, which sells the Round the island "A tu aire" (at your own pace) for €65 per adult (€55 residents; children 6 to 11, €33; under-5s free), with an optional start from Son Sardina station, which has free parking. The guided version with hotel pick-up and return by coach over the Sa Calobra road costs €78 (children €39).

On GetYourGuide, the equivalent combined Train, tram and boat ticket is from €65, the same price, rated 4.4 from 1,305 reviews. The full-day guided tours add a coach or transfer: the tour from the south of the island (from €103, more than 4,500 reviews), the version that adds the Lluc sanctuary (from €99) or the one with hotel transfer (from €110).

If you are staying in Palma, the €65 package costs the same direct as on the platform: choose by cancellation policy. If you are staying in Palmanova, Magaluf or Playa de Palma, the pick-up saves you an early start to get to Plaça d'Espanya. Platform comparisons in GetYourGuide and Civitatis.

From Palma there are three ways to reach the quay:

  • Train + tram: the train leaves next to Plaça d'Espanya (the 10:10 reaches Sóller at 11:10) and the tram takes about 30 minutes to the port.
  • TIB bus 204: Palma – Ma-11 tunnel – Sóller – Port de Sóller, the quick, cheap option.
  • TIB bus 203: via Valldemossa and Deià, longer and more scenic.

Free-flow driving time calculated with OSRM on OpenStreetMap data. In summer and at rush hour allow 20–30 % more, plus time to park near the port.

Our favourite trick: out by boat and back by road, or the other way round. A single boat ticket costs €23. The Ma-2141 road drops down to Sa Calobra from the Ma-10, past the Gorg Blau reservoir and the "nus de sa corbata" (the tie knot), a 360-degree loop. If someone in your group is driving, they can go down by car and pick up at Sa Calobra those who arrive by sea. More ideas for the day in day trips from Palma.

Sant Elm – Sa Dragonera and the boat from Port d'Andratx

At the south-western tip of the mountains, the other short crossing worth doing is Sant Elm – Sa Dragonera, an island 3,200 metres long and 500 wide, whose highest point, Na Pòpia, is 360 metres. It is run by Cruceros Margarita (website at crucerosmargarita.com).

  • Crossing: about 15 minutes.
  • Departures from Sant Elm: 09:45, 10:15, 10:45, 11:15, 11:45 and 12:15.
  • Returns from Dragonera: Tuesday to Sunday at 11:30, 12:30, 13:00, 13:30, 14:30, 15:00 and 15:50; Saturdays and Sundays also at 16:20 and 16:50.
  • Return fare: adults €19 + €1 tax; ages 9 to 14, €19; ages 4 to 8, €11.
  • Season: Tuesday to Sunday; no sailings on Mondays or from 1 November to the end of February.

Next to the island's quay there are toilets and a small museum. If you drive to Sant Elm, take one of the first boats: on weekdays the last return is at 15:50. On your own boat, use the field of 23 buoys at Sant Elm (reservas.portsib.es, from €3.93): anchoring on Posidonia seagrass is prohibited.

From Port d'Andratx a boat leaves for Sant Elm at 09:00 (Tuesday to Sunday; returning at 16:05 on weekdays, 17:05 at weekends), and the same company runs a 2-hour trip along that coast on a 20-passenger boat, with a swim, snorkelling and a drink. For a boat just for your group, see private boat.
