If you are reading Viator reviews for Mallorca before paying for a boat trip, here is the short answer: it is a big, serious platform with a clear cancellation policy, but it is not the one running the boat. Viator takes your money and handles the booking; the trip itself is run by a local boat company or skipper. Almost everything that goes wrong in the reviews comes from that gap between platform and supplier.

Who Viator is and how it works
Viator, Inc. is a Delaware company that describes itself as "a Tripadvisor company". For European customers it has a legal representative (under the EU Digital Services Act) at 70 Sir John Rogerson's Quay, Dublin 2. Its general terms are at viator.com/support/termsAndConditions.
The model is the same as GetYourGuide or Civitatis: you pay the platform and a local supplier runs the activity. That has a practical consequence. If the boat does not sail, the refund is handled under the platform's terms; if the boat sails but something is not right (menu, stops, timings), the complaint ends up with the supplier.
Which boats Viator sells in Mallorca
We could not count how many boat trips Viator has in Palma, so we looked at specific Mallorca listings. Three examples of private trips and rentals:
- Private llaüt (traditional Mallorcan boat) around the Bay of Palma from Bona Vida Charter: from €550, 4 to 5 hours, with water, soft drinks, alcohol, snorkelling gear and Mallorcan nibbles (cured meats, cheese, pa amb tomàquet). Note: the listing says the skipper's wage is not included.
- Motorboats in Can Pastilla advertised as "licence-free". Since 1 October 2026 nobody can rent a motorboat without a boating licence in Spain, not even a 5-metre, 15 hp one. If a listing still says so, it is out of date: read our guide to boat rental in Palma.
- Crewed llaüt in Port d'Andratx, 4 hours, with drinks, a paddleboard and snorkelling, but priced in dollars only.
Our advice: in Mallorca always compare in euros and ask what is included, especially fuel and the skipper. On llaüts with a skipper it is usually included; on motorboats rented with a skipper as an extra, it often is not. For private trips with everything clear, see our private boat in Palma guide.
Prices: Viator vs booking direct
Some Mallorca listings on Viator show the price in dollars only, so always compare the amount in euros. On private boats, the real differences come from what is included in the price. The skippered llaüts we know in Palma cost between €550 and €690 per group for half a day, and the €550 one leaves the skipper out. Before booking, open the operator's website if it has one and compare the same trip.
For shared trips (catamaran, sunset, dolphins), also compare with the boat companies' websites and other platforms. These are the most-booked trips in the bay on GetYourGuide:

What travellers say about Viator
When we checked, Viator had a rating of 4.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot from more than 332,000 reviews, 11 % of them one-star. It is a huge base, so the average is stable.
Three complaints come up again and again: hotel pick-ups that never arrive, refunds refused because "the supplier has not approved it", and poor coordination between the platform and the local company. All three fit the intermediary model. If your trip includes a pick-up, confirm the time and place with the supplier the day before.
How to book and cancel on Viator
How to book a boat on Viator without surprises
- Open the listing and find the cancellation policy before the price. If it says "All Sales Final", there is no refund.
- Check whether the activity has a fixed start time: the cancellation deadline depends on it.
- Check the currency and what is included: skipper, fuel, drinks, equipment.
- Note the exact meeting point and arrive with time to spare; arriving late counts as a no-show.
- If you need to change the day, do it within the deadline: changing the date is free.
The standard rule lets you change or cancel up to 24 hours before the start. If the activity has no fixed start time, the deadline is 23:59 two days before. With a boat this matters: in the Bay of Palma the embat, the south-westerly sea breeze, builds from midday and morning departures are usually calmer. Check the forecast before your deadline closes and read our guide to the weather for boat trips.
Alternatives to Viator
- GetYourGuide: the platform with the most catamarans and bay trips; free cancellation up to 24 h and the option to pay later.
- Civitatis: a Spanish company based in Madrid; sells the bay catamaran from €59 and Palma Aquarium at the official price.
- Booking direct with the boat company: compare in our boat trip comparison and our list of Palma operators.
Is Viator reliable for booking trips in Mallorca?
Yes, it is a big platform in the Tripadvisor group with 4.4 on Trustpilot. Complaints centre on failed pick-ups and refunds that depend on the supplier, so read each listing's policy carefully.
How late can I cancel on Viator?
Under the standard policy, up to 24 hours before the start. If the activity has no fixed start time, until 23:59 two days before. "All Sales Final" products are not refunded.
Can I change the date of my boat trip?
Yes, changing the date is free if you do it within that activity's cancellation deadline.
What happens if I am late for the boat?
Viator treats it as a no-show and does not refund you. Arrive in good time and confirm the exact pontoon.
Viator or GetYourGuide for a boat in Palma?
Both let you cancel free up to 24 hours before. GetYourGuide has the most-booked catamarans and shared trips in the bay; on Viator, check the currency and what each listing includes. Always compare with the operator's website.
