Party boats in Mallorca: what's legal, where they leave from and what they cost

A boat party in Mallorca today almost always leaves from Palma's Passeig Marítim (the seafront promenade): a DJ, pizza or a buffet and a pay bar from €39.90, for over-18s only at sunset and at night. In Magaluf, Playa de Palma and S'Arenal, party boats serving alcohol are banned from picking up customers.

If you're looking for a boat party in Mallorca, the first thing to know is where it can no longer happen. A Balearic decree-law, in the wording in force since 12 May 2024, stops boats with parties and alcohol from picking up customers in Magaluf, Playa de Palma and S'Arenal, and from coming within one nautical mile of their coast. That's why the real boat party, with a DJ and a dance floor, now leaves from central Palma.

This guide separates the adults-only parties from the daytime trips with music, with prices, what the bar includes, age limits and the rules that affect you as a passenger. If you'd rather watch the sunset in peace, go to sunset cruises in Palma.

The rule is Decree-law 1/2020, later renamed the law "for responsible tourism". Its article 8 covers boats that organise "parties or mass events with alcohol supplied", with a party meaning dancing or music on board, recorded or live. It bans those boats from two things:

  1. Picking up or dropping off customers in the affected areas to take them to the boat.
  2. Sailing within one nautical mile (about 1.85 km) of the coast of those areas.

The areas are Magaluf (the Punta Ballena area, in Calvià), Playa de Palma, S'Arenal (Llucmajor) and Sant Antoni, in Ibiza. Breaking article 8 is a very serious offence: a fine of €60,001 to €600,000, and the activity can also be banned for up to 3 years. The decree is currently in force until 31 December 2027. Full text in the BOE (Spain's official gazette).

It isn't a dead letter. In August 2023 Calvià fined a company €161,000 for boarding illegal parties from a jetty in Magaluf: police counted around 130 people who had paid €45 each, alcohol on board, unlabelled bottles and amplified music (Ajuntament de Calvià press release). Since 2018, party companies have lost the key to Magaluf's controlled-access jetty.

In the same areas, drinking alcohol in the street is banned (fine of €500 to €1,500) and shops cannot sell alcohol from 21:30 to 08:00. The total ban on alcohol on tourist boats applied during COVID is no longer in force: if you see an "alcohol banned on board" notice on a website, it's out of date.

The Muelle de las Golondrinas: the tender that could shut out party boats

Palma's boats leave from the Muelle de las Golondrinas, on the Passeig Marítim opposite the Auditòrium. The city centre isn't one of the decree's areas, but there's another front open.

  • First, the Balearic Port Authority put the management of the Golondrinas terminal out to tender. The terms expressly exclude boats that hold "parties or dancing on board with music" (Ports de Balears).
  • Five companies challenged it in court: Barca Samba, Cruceros Marco Polo, Attraction Catamarans, Oasis and Ociana Calvià.
  • In June the tender was shelved over an alleged leak of the terms, and the Port Authority agreed to relaunch it with new conditions, with no date set.
  • The mayor of Palma has also announced a total ban on party boats on the Passeig Marítim "from next season".

For now party boats are still leaving from Palma, but their place on the quay is up in the air. If you're booking for next season, check close to the date on Ports de Balears and on the operator's website.

Barca Samba: Palma's party boat

The Barca Samba is the only big boat with a DJ and a dance floor that leaves Palma daily, "since 1995". It's 23 m long, with two decks, a 25 m² dance floor, a long bar, four toilets and rain covers. It takes up to 112 passengers.

Trip Times Price Includes Age
Bahía de Palma Sail 11:00, 3 h, Thursday to Sunday from €39.90 pizza, water, 1 swim in the marine reserve families
Sail Experience 14:30 daily, 4 h (and 10:00 Friday and Saturday) from €44.92, €59.90 or €69.90 depending on the page buffet, 60-minute swim, DJ aimed at 25–50-year-olds

Palma by Night 22:30–01:30, Friday and Saturday; daily in summer from €39.90 pizza, water, DJ 18+ only

On its own website the Sail Experience shows several "from" prices (€44.92, €59.90 and €69.90): trust the one the booking engine gives you for your date. The operator says its price is the same direct as on the booking platforms, and warns that at the last minute some resellers show places that are no longer available. To book direct: barcasamba.com.

Daytime boats with a DJ or adults-only parties

Not everything sold as a "boat party" is a party. On the Bay of Palma there are three kinds of boat with music:

Evening and night parties, adults only

The Barca Samba at sunset and at night. It's the closest thing to a floating club: DJ, dance floor, bar and plenty of people. On GetYourGuide there are similar trips: the sunset tour with a DJ and dance floor is from €44.91 and the bay cruise with a live DJ and pizza from €39.90.

Daytime boats with music and a swim

These are 4–5 hour trips with food, a swim in a cove and a DJ or background music; the mood is lively but the point is the sea. This covers the Barca Samba Sail Experience, the Sea Day from Attraction Catamarans (10:00–15:00, buffet, DJ and a swim at Cala Blava, €85, with a child price) and, on the platforms, the luxury catamaran with food and a DJ to Cala Vella from €85 or the daytime boat with a swim and music from €50.92. To compare catamarans without the party, see catamaran trips in Palma.

With an open bar

An open bar is rare on the bay. The clearest case on the platforms is the 4-hour midday or sunset sailing trip with snacks and an open bar from €95, with paddleboarding and snorkelling. On the other boats you pay for each drink.

Prices and drinks: what the bar includes

A ticket for a party boat costs between €39.90 and €95. On almost all of them what's included is food (pizza, a buffet or a barbecue) and water; drinks are extra.

  • Barca Samba: pizza or a buffet and water. The bar opens 15 minutes after departure and closes 15 minutes before you're back; pay in cash or by card. The free welcome drink was part of an old offer: current tickets don't include it.
  • Attraction: cocktail €15, Aperol €12, glass of sangria €10, beer €4–5, glass of cava €5, soft drink €3, water €2 (bar menu).
  • Barca Samba and Life & Sea don't allow outside drinks on board, and the Barca Samba doesn't allow outside food either. On the others, ask when you book.

Do the maths: on Attraction's menu, three cocktails come to €45, more than the cheapest ticket. If you want to drink without watching the bill, the open-bar option can work out better value even though the ticket costs more.

Boat parties from Magaluf, Palmanova or Playa de Palma

If you're staying in Magaluf or Palmanova, the nearest legal boat party leaves from Palma. From Magaluf there are daytime trips with music, such as the bay cruise with live music and a buffet lunch from €64: going by its description it's a sightseeing cruise (cathedral, Marivent palace, a swim), not an open-bar party. Family options in the area are in boat trips from Palmanova and Magaluf.

It's the same from Playa de Palma and S'Arenal: catamarans and speedboats leave from there for swimming and coastal sightseeing (see boat trips from El Arenal), but the party with alcohol has to go to Palma.

How to get to Palma's boat party from your hotel

  1. From Magaluf or Palmanova: TIB 104 bus to Palma. The last bus back leaves Palma at 22:30, so after the Sunset trip (back at 22:00) it's tight, and after Palma by Night (01:30) there's no bus: book a taxi.
  2. From the centre: EMT line 1 stops on the Passeig Marítim, opposite the Auditòrium (€2 in cash; cheaper with a contactless card).
  3. By car: parking on the Passeig Marítim is difficult; Magic Catamarans recommends the Marquès de la Sènia pay car park, and the Barca Samba warns of roadworks in the area.
  4. Arrive 20 minutes early: the Barca Samba closes boarding 5 minutes before departure and anyone who misses it loses their ticket.

Minimum age and rules on board

  • 18+ only: the Barca Samba sunset and night trips and Oasis's sunset trips.
  • Not recommended for children: the Barca Samba Sail Experience, designed for adults aged 25 to 50.
  • With children: the Barca Samba morning trip (Bahía de Palma Sail) and Attraction's Sea Day, which has a child price.
  • For products on the booking platforms, check the minimum age on the listing before paying.

Stag and hen parties: the Barca Samba asks them not to come in fancy dress and doesn't allow fancy dress in general. Oasis bans fancy dress and stag or hen props and doesn't accept stag or hen groups that weren't declared when booking. If you're a big group, always let them know.

For a party with just your friends, the alternative is a private boat: on GetYourGuide there's a private sunset boat party with water toys from €499 per group. More options in private boat hire in Palma.

Safety: what's worth knowing

A party boat is a boat, not a bar on dry land. A few things avoid almost every problem:

  • Stairs: the Barca Samba has two decks joined by steep stairs. Going down with a drink in your hand while the boat is moving is the easiest way to get hurt.
  • Swimming and alcohol: if there's a swim stop, don't jump in if you've drunk a lot. The captain is in charge on board, and on boats like Life & Sea's the skipper can refuse boarding for safety reasons.
  • Seasickness: alcohol makes it worse. If you're prone to it, stay in the middle of the boat on the lower deck, look at the horizon and eat something. The afternoon breeze on the bay, the embat (afternoon sea breeze), peaks at around 14:00; more detail in the best time for a boat trip.
  • Sun: daytime trips spend 4 hours on deck. Water, a cap and sun cream.
  • Accessibility: the Barca Samba doesn't take wheelchairs.
  • Cancellation: free up to 24 h before on Barca Samba; on Attraction, 48 h. If the weather forces a cancellation, the captain decides.

Frequently asked questions

Are boat parties banned in Mallorca?

Not entirely. The ones that pick up customers in Magaluf, Playa de Palma or S'Arenal, or come within one nautical mile of those areas, are banned. They still leave from Palma's Passeig Marítim, although a port tender could exclude them from the quay.

How much does a boat party in Palma cost?

From €39.90 on the Barca Samba (pizza, water and a DJ); on GetYourGuide there are DJ boats from €39.90. Drinks are extra; the open-bar sailing option costs from €95.

Is there an open-bar boat party in Mallorca?

It's unusual. On the Bay of Palma the clearest one is a 4-hour sailing trip with snacks and an open bar, from €95. Be wary of the ones sold to you in the street in Magaluf.

How old do you have to be for a boat party?

18 for the Barca Samba sunset and night trips. Its 4-hour daytime trip isn't recommended for children.

Is there a boat party from Magaluf or Palmanova?

Not legally with alcohol and a party: the law bans boarding customers in Magaluf. Sightseeing cruises with music leave from Calvià; the DJ party leaves from Palma, which you can reach on the TIB 104 bus.

Can I bring my own drinks on the boat?

On the Barca Samba and Life & Sea, no: drinks are bought at the bar. On other boats, ask when you book; some private boats do allow it.
