Jet skis in Palma de Mallorca are the motorised activity that causes the most confusion over licences. Quick summary: without a boating qualification you can drive a jet ski, but only inside a marked circuit or on a guided tour behind an instructor. Going out on your own requires at least the navigation licence.

This guide covers the rules, prices per jet ski and per person, where each activity leaves from (Cala Gamba, S'Arenal, Magaluf, Santa Ponça) and what each one includes. It also covers parasailing, flyboarding, banana boats and speedboats, which are often sold from the same beach kiosk.

Jet ski without a licence: circuit or guided tour

The rule is national (Royal Decree 259/2002, as last amended) and applies equally in Palma, Magaluf or Alcúdia:

  • Without a qualification there are only two options: the marked circuit (a course marked with at least 4 buoys, set by the Harbour Master) and the guided group tour, with a qualified instructor in front.
  • Age: 18 to drive; 16 to 17 with consent from parents or guardians.
  • Maximum 2 people per jet ski and one instructor for every 4 jet skis on tours, riding in pairs at least 25 m apart.
  • Limited power: rental jet skis can't exceed 60 hp.
  • Life jacket compulsory for everyone.
  • Hours: from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset.
  • Never inside marked swimming areas.
  • Third-party liability and accident insurance is compulsory for rentals.

When an advert says "jet ski without a licence", it means a guided tour or a circuit. Roaming the bay freely without a qualification isn't legal. You can read the text in the BOE, RD 259/2002.

Jet ski prices in Palma and around

Prices per jet ski, from the shortest option to the longest:

Activity Departs from Duration Price
Playa de Palma beach ride Playa de Palma 25 min from €80
Jet ski with Life & Sea S'Arenal / Can Pastilla 25 min from €80
Tour to the cathedral Bay of Palma 30 min from €99
Racing circuit Santa Ponça 30–40 min from €100
Los Deltas tour Bay of Palma 1 h from €169
Bay of Alcúdia Alcúdia 30 min from €99
Sea Lion Cave or Lighthouse Island Cala Millor 1–1.5 h from €165

Which to choose. For a first go, the half hour to the cathedral gives you the classic photo of La Seu from the water. The hour around Los Deltas is worth it if you've driven a jet ski before and want a longer route: it's twice the time. The exact meeting point is on each tour's listing. The Santa Ponça circuit is for those who want throttle and bends, not scenery.

First time on a jet ski

A short half hour with the cathedral as backdrop, behind the instructor.

2

4

Speed seekers

Closed circuit in Santa Ponça: bends and throttle, no sightseeing route.

Where jet skis leave from: Cala Gamba, S'Arenal, Magaluf

Guided tours near Palma don't leave from the Passeig Marítim (seafront promenade): they're concentrated at the Club Nàutic Cala Gamba, between Palma and Can Pastilla. That's the meeting point both for Mallorca On Jetski, which lists bases all over the island, and for the 30-minute Civitatis tour (from €99, with instructor, views of the cathedral and Marivent, and free cancellation up to 24 h before). Cala Gamba currently flies a Blue Flag as a marina.

  • S'Arenal: Life & Sea, next to the Club Nàutic S'Arenal, sells jet skis (25 min from €80), parasailing and speedboat rides.
  • Magaluf: on the beach there's a water-sports centre with jet ski safaris (two per jet ski), parasailing, speedboat rides, banana boats and other towed inflatables. It's open 12:00 to 16:30 and may cancel at short notice if the sea is rough. It doesn't publish prices: ask at the kiosk and compare.
  • Santa Ponça: a 30–40 minute racing circuit.
  • North and east: Alcúdia and Cala Millor have their own routes, handy if you're staying there.

Parasailing in Palma, S'Arenal and Magaluf

Parasailing in the Bay of Palma leaves from S'Arenal and Magaluf. In S'Arenal it's run by Life & Sea (Av. Miramar 22) and the terms are clear:

  • €65 per group: 2 or 3 people fly under the same canopy. There are no solo flights.
  • 10 minutes in the air, 1 h 15 min in total including the boat trip.
  • Up to 50 m high.
  • Minimum age: 10, maximum 250 kg combined, and you must be able to swim.
  • Includes skipper, life jacket, harness and fuel. Photos cost €25 and a companion who doesn't fly another €25.

On Magaluf beach flights last 8 to 10 minutes and children from age 4 are accepted, but you ask for the price there. On the booking platforms, the parasailing experience in the bay costs from €65.

Flyboarding in Mallorca: price, age and where

A flyboard lifts you above the water on a pressurised jet connected to a jet ski. There are two options near Palma:

  • Mallorca Flyboard, in El Arenal (C/ Llaüt 36-38): 15 minutes from €65.
  • Port Calanova / Portals Nous, west of Palma: 15–20 minutes from €65, 30 minutes from €130 and a private session from €249. Minimum age 9, you must be able to swim and you rise to about 12 m.

The first few minutes go on learning to balance. Fifteen minutes is enough for a couple of lifts; if you want to do more than fall off in style, the half hour makes more sense.

Banana boats, inflatables and speedboats

The banana boat and other towed inflatables are offered at the water-sports centre on Magaluf beach, along with other inflatables such as the Flying UFO. There's no published price: ask at the kiosk before paying and confirm how many minutes it lasts.

The speedboat is the alternative for those who want speed without driving:

  • Life & Sea, from S'Arenal: 1 h for €40. On the booking platforms it appears as a 1-hour speedboat adventure from €40.
  • Cruceros Costa de Calvià, Limitless speedboat (30 seats, about 2 h) with a swim stop at the Malgrats islands: €40 adults and €30 children, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from Magaluf and Son Matias.
  • From Port de Sóller there's a speedboat to Sa Calobra and Cala Tuent from €49, more scenery than adrenaline.

Safety and what each activity includes

On a guided jet ski tour you wear a compulsory life jacket and follow an instructor, and third-party liability and accident insurance is compulsory for the company. Photos are usually extra (€25 on the S'Arenal parasailing); some Alcúdia routes include them.

Worth knowing before you book:

  • Go in the morning. The bay's south-westerly breeze, the embat (afternoon sea breeze), builds after midday and peaks around 14:00. In choppy water the jet ski bounces and beach kiosks may cancel at short notice. More in the guide to boating weather.
  • Cancellations due to sea conditions are normal, especially at beach kiosks. Book with free cancellation (on GetYourGuide, up to 24 h before; read our GetYourGuide review) and leave a spare day.
  • Being able to swim is a requirement for parasailing and flyboarding.
  • Wear clothes that can get wet and leave your phone ashore or in a dry bag: on a jet ski you will get soaked.
  • Dolphins are not to be chased. If you want to see them, a dedicated trip is better: read the guide to dolphin watching in Mallorca.

Jet ski on your own: with a navigation licence

If you want to go without an instructor, you need a qualification. The simplest is the navigation licence: about 2 hours of theory and 4 of practice at a boating school, with no exam, and it lets you drive jet skis and boats up to 6 m, in daylight and no more than 2 miles from a port or shelter. The same goes for motorboats: since 1 October boats are no longer rented without a qualification. Full details in the guide to boat rental in Palma.
