Palma catamaran cruises: routes, what each boat includes and which to pick

The three big operators run almost the same route: from the Paseo Marítimo to the coves of Llucmajor, with a swim and lunch. What changes is how many people are on board, which drinks are in the price and whether there are paddle boards.

A catamaran in Palma de Mallorca is the easiest way to spend a day at sea: you walk to the boat on the Paseo Marítimo, cross the bay with the cathedral behind you and swim in the coves of the Llucmajor coast. What the booking pages don't tell you is that Magic Catamarans, Oasis Catamaran and Attraction Catamarans are three separate companies leaving from the same quay and heading for the same coast. You're not choosing a destination: you're choosing group size, what's included and whether you want music or quiet.

With children and a tight budget, Magic's standard trip (€59, 5 h, barbecue and drinks included) is hard to beat. For a small group and a paddle board, pay the step up to Magic Plus or Oasis. For a DJ and a buffet, Attraction.

Catamaran in Palma: prices by operator

Prices published by the operators themselves for one adult. You'll see similar figures on the booking platforms.

Operator and trip Adult Duration Food Drinks included Max. on board
Magic · Palma Sea Tapas €39 3 h 30 tapas soft drinks and water not published
Life & Sea · Catamaran Tour (S'Arenal) €40 2 h no no not published
Magic · Bahía de Palma €59 5 h barbecue soft drinks, coffee; sangria and wine with lunch not published
Life & Sea · Day Trip (S'Arenal) €65 4 h barbecue 1 drink not published
Magic · Bahía de Palma Plus €74 5 h aperitif and barbecue 1 glass + sangria and wine with lunch 35
Oasis · Palma Bay Deluxe €78–82 4 h 30 barbecue water 36
Attraction · Sea Day €85 5 h buffet none (not even water) boat for 145
Oasis · Premium Day Trip €89–93 5 h 30 aperitif and barbecue water 55
Oasis · Blue Small Groups €99–109 4 h 30 finger food 1 glass of cava 22

At Oasis the price rises from 1 June to mid-September, and for the Premium its website takes 5 % off online. Only Magic includes soft drinks and wine as standard. On Oasis you pay at the bar for everything except water; on Attraction you pay for water too (€2), and its bar list isn't cheap: beer €4–5, a glass of sangria €10, a cocktail €15. Add two rounds per head before comparing prices: the gap between operators shifts quite a bit.

Children don't pay the same either: Magic charges half price from 7 to 14 and nothing up to 6; Oasis has a child fare from 4 to 10 on the Premium and the Deluxe (€65–75); Attraction charges €75 from 6 to 12 and nothing up to 5; Life & Sea, half price from 3 to 12.

Routes: Cova Verda, Cap Rocat, Cala Vella and Cala Blava

All the big catamarans in Palma cross the bay to the south-east, towards Cap Enderrocat and Cala Blava, in Llucmajor. None of these operators includes Portals Vells on its routes: that cove is on the other side of the bay, in Calvià.

  • Cova Verda (Cueva Verde, the "Green Cave"): first swim stop on Magic's standard trip and the aperitif stop on the Oasis Premium. A cove ringed by natural caves.
  • Cap Rocat: swim and aperitif on Magic Plus.
  • Cala Vella: the long lunch stop on every Magic and Oasis day trip. Magic's Sea Tapas stays here for an hour and a half.
  • Cala Blava: Attraction's swim and snorkel stop, by day and at sunset.

They all go there because that coast is sheltered and lies inside the Bay of Palma marine reserve, with Posidonia seagrass meadows on the seabed. At Cala Blava there's a regulated mooring-buoy field where anchoring isn't allowed, so expect the boat to tie up to a buoy. The flip side: in summer you'll share the cove with other catamarans. If you want it to yourself, look at a private boat or a sailing boat. What you'll see underwater at those stops is covered in snorkelling and paddle boarding.

What's included: food, drinks, snorkelling and paddle boarding

Lunch is usually a barbecue on board. On Magic's standard trip: skewers and chicken breast, sausages, salads, bread, sponge cake and watermelon; there's a vegetarian menu if you ask when booking or 24 h before. Attraction swaps the barbecue for a catered buffet and adds a DJ.

Snorkelling and paddle boarding are where the real differences lie:

  • Magic standard: mask and snorkel against a €10 deposit, life jackets and a giant floating mat. No boards.
  • Magic Plus: paddle boards and kayak included; snorkel gear against a €20 deposit.
  • Oasis: paddle boarding included on every trip; snorkel gear costs €20.
  • Attraction: swim and snorkel stop at Cala Blava; it doesn't say whether it lends gear.
  • Life & Sea: snorkel and life jacket included.

The Magic catamarans and the Life & Sea boat have two toilets and freshwater showers. And one detail: on board Magic you can only pay by card, and American Express isn't accepted.

Standard, premium or VIP: what the extra buys you

"Premium" means different things depending on who says it. In practice you pay for fewer people, an aperitif and paddle boards.

Magic Plus (€74) is the standard trip for €15 more: a cap of 35 passengers, an aperitif of Iberian ham, cheese and coca de trempó (a Mallorcan flatbread with peppers and onion) at Cap Rocat, one drink, and boards and a kayak. For a couple or a family with teenagers it's our value-for-money pick.

Oasis Premium (€89–93) runs on the Oasis II with 55 people at most: aperitif and a swim at the Cueva Verde, barbecue at Cala Vella, paddle boarding. The weak spot is drinks: only water is included.

Oasis Blue (€99–109) is the closest thing to a private boat without paying for one: 22 people maximum, a glass of cava, finger food and boards.

Attraction's VIP is something else: a Balinese daybed for two at €300 for the package, on a boat that holds 145. You're buying your own corner, not fewer people around you.

Boat size: 22 to 145 passengers

Size changes the trip more than the menu does. On a boat for 145 there are more people in every cove, more queuing for everything and the music reaches every corner. With 22 you sit where you like.

Boat Operator Capacity or cap Length
Attraction (Sea Day boat) Attraction 145 + crew 24 m
Taiti 75 Magic 92–104 22.80 m
Taiti 60 Magic 71 18.20 m
Oasis II Oasis 55 on the Premium 18 m
Freebird 50 Magic 40 16 m
Oasis Lux Oasis 36 on the Deluxe 15.23 m
Oasis Blue Oasis 22 on Small Groups 13.61 m

Magic doesn't publish which hull runs each Palma departure; if it matters to you, ask when booking. Its fleet includes the Freebird 50, a 100 % electric catamaran with 40 places. Don't pay extra for an "eco" label without confirming you'll get that boat.

Catamaran from S'Arenal: Life & Sea

If you're staying in Playa de Palma or S'Arenal, there's no need to go to the Paseo Marítimo. Life & Sea leaves from S'Arenal beach, from its kiosk next to the Club Nàutic S'Arenal:

  • Catamaran Tour, 2 h, €40: at 14:30 or 15:30, with snorkelling, no food.
  • Catamaran Day Trip, 4 h, €65: at 10:00, with a barbecue, pasta salad and one drink.

Its pages don't name specific coves, so don't count on Cova Verda. You board from the sand and it isn't wheelchair accessible. Arrive 15 minutes early and park around Son Veri Nou, as the operator recommends. More in boat trips from El Arenal and in our review of Life & Sea.

Where the catamaran leaves from in Palma and how to get there

Magic, Attraction, the Oasis II and the Oasis Blue board at the Muelle de las Golondrinas on the Paseo Marítimo (Av. Gabriel Roca), opposite the Auditòrium. The exception that catches a lot of people out: the Oasis Lux (Palma Bay Deluxe and its adults-only sunset trip) leaves from the Escala Real (the "Royal Steps"), next to the Moll Vell (old pier), below the cathedral, 1.5 km from the other quay. Free-flow driving time calculated with OSRM on OpenStreetMap data. In summer and at rush hour allow 20–30 % more, plus time to park near the port.

How to get to the Muelle de las Golondrinas

  1. On foot: from the cathedral, about 1.5 km west along the Paseo Marítimo.
  2. By bus: EMT line 1 runs from Plaça d'Espanya along the Paseo Marítimo to the ferry terminals; get off at the Auditòrium stop.
  3. By car: parking by the quay is difficult; Magic recommends the Marquès de la Sènia pay car park, on the Paseo Marítimo itself.
  4. With a transfer: Magic offers hotel pick-up from El Dorado to Camp de Mar (price not published); Attraction charges €30 per person.
  5. Leave some margin: Attraction asks you to be there 10 minutes early.

This quay is the subject of a Port Authority tender that would exclude party boats with music. Several operators, Oasis and Attraction among them, challenged it in court, and it was shelved to be relaunched with new terms. For now the catamarans leave from there as normal; if you're booking well ahead, check portsdebalears.com. Everything that leaves from the city's quays is in boat trips from Palma.

Morning or afternoon: wind, the embat and seasickness

Almost every operator runs two sailings: morning (10:00 to 15:00 with Magic and Attraction, from 09:30 with Oasis) and afternoon (15:30 to 20:30 or 21:00).

If you get seasick, pick the morning. In summer the embat, the south-westerly afternoon sea breeze, blows into the bay, peaks around 14:00 and kicks up a short chop. The afternoon sailing sets off right into it. On board, sit in the middle on the lower deck, look at the horizon and avoid your phone, heavy food and alcohol.

To watch the sunset from the water there are dedicated sailings: Magic's Sunset Bahía costs €20 for an hour and a half, and the rest are in sunset cruises. The season doesn't end in September: Oasis publishes prices until the end of October, with the sea still around 22 °C. Months, water and wind are covered in the best time for a boat trip.

Booking and cancelling: what to know

On GetYourGuide you can book without paying: the charge comes 72 hours before and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. If the operator cancels for bad weather, GetYourGuide refunds you. Buying direct makes sense if you want a specific boat. The direct terms:

  • Magic: free up to 24 h before. Freephone 900 102 894.
  • Oasis: full refund with 24 h notice. The person booking must be an adult.
  • Attraction: free only with 48 h notice; with 24 h you need €5-per-person insurance, and changing the date without insurance costs €30 per person.
  • Life & Sea: 24 h; weather changes are "without compensation" and online payment carries a 2.5 % surcharge.
