For dolphin watching from Palma there are two proper trips: Palma Cruises from the Paseo Marítimo (€55, €49.50 online) and Life & Sea from S'Arenal, with the bay's only sunrise departure (€80). Neither guarantees dolphins.

Dolphin watching in Mallorca is possible from Palma, but it pays to arrive with realistic expectations. These are wild animals, no operator in the bay guarantees a sighting and the law makes boats keep their distance. What you can choose is the boat, the time and the harbour that give you the best chance of coming back happy.

This guide is about wild dolphins at sea. If you were looking for a dolphinarium or a dolphin show, this is not the place: we do not cover them on this site.

The two dolphin tours that leave from Palma

In the Bay of Palma there are two trips genuinely designed to look for dolphins. Everything else with "dolphin" in the name is something different: the "Dolphin" run by Cruceros Costa de Calvià, for example, is a 2-hour glass-bottom boat trip hugging the coast of Magaluf and Palmanova; as it follows the shoreline, dolphins are not guaranteed. We cover it in our Cruceros Costa de Calvià review.

Palma Cruises: from the Paseo Marítimo, price and times

Palma Cruises (Tramontana SL, a company based in Paguera) leaves from the Muelle de las Golondrinas, on the Paseo Marítimo (Palma's seafront promenade) opposite the Auditòrium. The trip lasts 3 hours and the route is adjusted each morning. They look for bottlenose and striped dolphins, and now and then a common dolphin turns up.

The timetable is a little muddled: the website advertises departures at 10:00 and 14:00, but the booking system shows the morning trip at 10:30, boarding at 10:15. Plan on one morning and one early-afternoon departure, and check the exact time on your ticket.

Direct prices

Fare Straight to the boat With coach transfer
Adult €55 €65
Child €35 €45
Infant €15 €15
Senior €45 €55

Booking online gets you 10% off: the adult fare comes down to €49.50 without transfer and €58.50 with it. If you can get to the Paseo Marítimo under your own steam, you save €10 per adult.

The transfer runs on two routes. The Calvià route starts in Camp de Mar at 08:15 and goes through Paguera, Santa Ponsa, Magaluf, Palmanova, Portals Nous, Illetes and Cala Major to Club de Mar at 10:05; the afternoon run starts at 11:45. The Arenal route leaves El Dorado at 09:00 and runs through S'Arenal and Playa de Palma to Can Pastilla at 09:45. That is why the booking platforms list this same trip as lasting 4 to 5.5 hours: they count the coach.

On board there is a bar selling food and drink (with vegan options). The audio guide is digital, so bring a charged phone and your own headphones. The person booking must be an adult. There is more detail in our Palma Cruises review, and the official website is palmacruises.com.

Life & Sea: sunrise dolphins from S'Arenal

Life & Sea leaves from the far end of S'Arenal beach, next to the Club Nàutic S'Arenal (in the municipality of Llucmajor, not Palma), and from the sailing club at Can Pastilla. It charges €80 per adult and €70 per child aged 3 to 12, for 3 hours, with insurance, a life jacket and a swim stop in a cove after the dolphin search. The operator talks of "very high" chances but makes it clear that a sighting is not guaranteed.

Its trump card is the 06:00 departure, the only sunrise trip in the bay. In the morning the sea is usually flatter than in the afternoon, and the operator recommends bringing a jacket for that early trip.

Paying online adds a 2.5% card fee. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before. More at lifeandsea.com and in our Life & Sea review.

How to reach the Life & Sea boarding point

  1. S'Arenal: the office is on c/ Balneario, at the end of the beach next to the Club Nàutic; you get in from the beach, through the gates, not through the club entrance.
  2. That access is not wheelchair-friendly. Arrive 15 minutes early.
  3. By car, the operator suggests parking around Son Verí Nou.
  4. Can Pastilla: boarding is at the sailing club entrance, Carrer de les Nanses 7. Buses 31, 32, 35 or A2 to the "Cala Estancia" stop, then a 5-minute walk.

With small children, a pushchair or luggage, Can Pastilla is the easier option. All the detail on that area is in our guide to boats from S'Arenal and Can Pastilla.

Dolphin watching from Paguera, Santa Ponsa and the Calvià coast

If you are staying in the west, the booking platforms list short dolphin trips from Paguera and Santa Ponsa, lasting about 2–2.5 hours and costing from €40. They score very well (4.5–4.6 from thousands of reviews), but look at the format: the Paguera one is a glass-bottom boat. They are good outings, with dolphins as a possibility rather than the sole aim.

Palma Cruises also picks up in Paguera, Santa Ponsa, Magaluf and Palmanova on its Calvià transfer, if you would rather do a trip dedicated purely to dolphins.

Alcúdia and the north: the "100% guaranteed" trips

The north of the island sells plenty of dolphin trips: from Port d'Alcúdia, Can Picafort and Port de Pollença, many of them at sunrise. Lanchas La Gaviota, in Port de Pollença, runs a 3.5-hour sunrise dolphin trip with breakfast for €55 (children €45). Click-Mallorca, based in Port d'Alcúdia, sells its dolphin trips only from Alcúdia, at €56 and €66.

Several northern trips are advertised as "100% guaranteed". It is worth knowing what that means. Nobody can guarantee that wild animals will appear, least of all under a law that bans chasing them. What an operator can guarantee is what it does if they do not show up: refund you, let you go again another day for free, or nothing at all. Those terms are not always visible on the listing, so before you pay, ask in writing what happens if there are no dolphins and keep the reply.

What are the chances of seeing dolphins?

Let's be honest: there is no independent figure. Palma Cruises says it sees dolphins on 90% of its trips, but that is its own number and nobody audits it; Life & Sea talks of "very high" chances without giving a figure. Palma has a scientific association, founded in 1998, that started out studying bottlenose dolphins, but no sighting rate for the bay has been published that would be useful to a visitor.

What does improve your odds:

  • Go in the morning. The sea is flatter, fins are easier to spot and the south-westerly breeze (the embat) has not yet set in; it peaks around 14:00.
  • Choose a dedicated 3-hour trip rather than a coastal cruise with "dolphin" in its name.
  • Leave yourself some slack. If the trip is cancelled because of wind, you want another day free to try again.

And if they do not appear, which can happen, the rest of the trip (the swim, the underwater viewing, the coast from the sea) is still worth it. Better to go with that in mind than with an advert's promise.

Dolphin-watching rules in Spain: distances and swimming

In Spain, whale and dolphin watching is regulated by Royal Decree 1727/2007, in force since January 2008. It applies to everyone: commercial trips, private boats and rentals. You can read it in the BOE (Spain's official gazette).

Zone around the dolphins Distance What the law allows
Exclusion Under 60 m No boat may enter
Restricted 60–300 m Maximum 2 boats at a time; none if there is a mother alone with her calf
Approach 300–500 m Maximum 2 boats waiting

The boat must also travel at no more than 4 knots and never faster than the slowest animal. It has to approach on a converging course, at an angle of about 30°, never head-on, from behind or cutting across their path. It may not reverse, circle them or use sonar or noise to attract them. Feeding them is prohibited. If the dolphins approach the boat themselves, it may hold its course and speed.

If you hire a boat with a skipper, the same rules apply to you. Remember too that since 1 October 2026 you can no longer rent a motorboat without a boating licence: we explain it in our boat rental guide.

Seasickness and what to bring

Three hours scanning for fins on the open sea can make anyone queasy, especially with a swell. The NHS's basic advice:

  • Sit in the middle of the boat and look at the horizon.
  • Get fresh air on deck; avoid reading or looking at your phone.
  • Do not eat a heavy meal or drink alcohol before boarding.
  • Pharmacies sell seasickness tablets (children's versions too); patches are for adults and children over 10. Ginger helps some people, and acupressure bands do not work for everyone.

The bay's operators sum it up like this: the sea is flatter in the morning. If you get seasick, the 06:00 or 09:15 trips are better than the 12:45 or early-afternoon ones.

Bring a cap, sun cream, water, swimwear and a towel for the swim stop, and a jacket for the sunrise trip. Check the month-by-month outlook in our guide to weather for boat trips.

Where can you see dolphins in Mallorca?

From Palma, Palma Cruises (Muelle de las Golondrinas, on the Paseo Marítimo) and Life & Sea (S'Arenal and Can Pastilla). In the north there are many trips from Port d'Alcúdia, Can Picafort and Port de Pollença, and in the west, cruises from Paguera and Santa Ponsa.

How much does dolphin watching in Palma cost?

Palma Cruises costs €55 per adult boarding at the pier (€49.50 online) and €65 with a hotel transfer. Life & Sea costs €80 per adult and €70 per child aged 3 to 12.

Is seeing dolphins guaranteed in Mallorca?

No, no trip in the Bay of Palma guarantees a sighting. Palma Cruises claims a 90% success rate based on its own data and Life & Sea talks of very high chances, with no guarantee.

What does "100% guaranteed" mean on Alcúdia dolphin tours?

It is a commercial promise about what happens if they do not appear, not about the animals. Before you pay, ask in writing whether you get a refund or a free repeat trip.

Can you swim with dolphins in Mallorca?

Not with wild dolphins: Royal Decree 1727/2007 bans swimming or diving in the exclusion zone (under 60 m) and bans boats from entering it. Swim stops take place in coves, well away from the animals.

What is the best time of day for dolphin watching?

The morning. The sea is calmer before the afternoon breeze sets in, and you are less likely to feel seasick. In the Bay of Palma, the only sunrise trip is Life & Sea's 06:00 departure from S'Arenal.
