What Mallorca City Boat is and what happened to Cruceros Marco Polo

Cruceros Marco Polo is still sailing, but under another name. It now advertises itself as "Mallorca City Boat — Cruceros Marco Polo", run by Sa Calma Boats, and the old crucerosmarcopolo.com website redirects to cityboatmallorca.com. Its website also bills it as the "official" boat trip of City Sightseeing, the sightseeing-bus brand, but City Sightseeing sells its own boat trip at a different price and length: don't assume it is the same ticket.

Sa Calma Boats is a Palma boat company with an office at Calle Sant Miquel 63 and customer service on WhatsApp. It runs other trips around the bay, for example from Can Pastilla, with swimming and snorkelling.

If you come across old listings that place the boat opposite the Auditòrium and price it at €10 or €12, they are out of date: today it boards at the Escala Real and costs €19.

What it offers: 55 minutes around Palma port

It is a 55-minute scenic loop. The boat passes in front of the Almudaina and the cathedral, looks up towards Bellver Castle, runs along the port past the lighthouse, the Porto Pi naval base and the cruise terminal, and goes as far as the Castell de Sant Carles before turning back.

There is no swim stop. On board there is a toilet and a bar, and the ticket includes water and a snack. It is a good plan for your first afternoon in Palma, for resting your feet between sights or for travelling with older people who don't want to spend half a day at sea. If you want to swim in a cove, look at the catamaran in Palma or the snorkelling trips.

Times and season

It leaves every hour from 11:00 to 17:00, every day except Sunday, and the company itself warns that times may change with the season. Sa Calma Boats operates from April to October. In autumn the last port trips of the day are often cut, so if you are going in mid or late October, confirm the time before you go.

Where it leaves from: the Escala Real, by the Moll Vell

Boarding is at the Escala Real, next to the Moll Vell (the old quay) and below the cathedral; its website also calls it the Muelle de la Lonja. Look for the Marcopolo sign and arrive 10 minutes early.

It is the boarding point you can walk to from the old town, so it combines well with a visit to the cathedral or a stroll through the old town and the Arab Baths.

Prices: direct, agencies and sightseeing bus

Where Adult Children
Mallorca City Boat website €19 Contradictory: see below
Click-Mallorca (1 h bay trip) €19 €8 (ages 5–12); free from 0 to 4
Civitatis (boat trip in Palma) From €19 Depends on the listing

The Click-Mallorca and Civitatis listings don't always say which company runs the trip: if you want this particular boat, buy on the Mallorca City Boat website. For children, the company's website says in one place "free from 0 to 5 and half price from 6 to 12", and in its FAQs "free for under-3s". If you are travelling with children aged 3 to 5, ask before paying. Accessibility is the same story: the home page says the boat is adapted for reduced mobility and the tickets page says it isn't. Send a WhatsApp message before you go.

City Sightseeing sells its own 50-minute boat trip from the Escalera Real, Monday to Saturday from April to November, from €21.74, and also bundles it with the sightseeing bus. If you are buying the bus anyway, the combo may be worth it; if you only want the boat, the €19 on the company's website is cheaper. Details in the Palma sightseeing bus guide.

What travellers say

There are few independent reviews under the new brand. Sa Calma Boats shows a 4.9 Google rating on its website, but that is for the company as a whole and it publishes it itself. An old directory listing, with boarding opposite the Auditòrium and a different price, gave Marco Polo 3.7 on Google from 58 reviews; it reflects the earlier era.

What you can verify: the price is published, the route is described in detail and the company warns there is no swim stop. To avoid disappointment, be clear that it is a loop around the port, not a trip to coves.

How to book and cancel

You book on its website. If the weather doesn't allow a safe departure, you get your money back or a new date. In the bay the embat (the south-westerly afternoon sea breeze) comes in and the sea gets a little choppy; even on a 55-minute trip inside the port, morning departures tend to be calmer (when to go out on a boat).
