Boat trips from Palma nearly all leave from the same stretch of harbour, but not from the same quay, and that detail has plenty of people running every morning. The big catamarans, the party boat and the dolphin trip board at the Muelle de las Golondrinas (Golondrinas quay), on the Passeig Marítim (the seafront promenade) opposite the Auditòrium. The short bay cruise, one of the Oasis catamarans and the boat over from Magaluf use the Escala Real, below the Cathedral. The walk between the two is about 1.5 km.

Private boats and skippered llaüts (traditional Mallorcan boats) leave from the sailing clubs at the western end of the promenade. Below it's all sorted by quay, by time and by how to get there.

The rule of thumb: if your ticket says Golondrinas, Auditòrium or Paseo Marítimo, it's the same place. If it says Escala Real, Lonja or Moll Vell, it's the other one.

Golondrinas quay: catamarans, dolphins and the party boat

This is the local-traffic quay, on Avenida Gabriel Roca, opposite the Auditòrium. It takes its name from the "golondrinas", the white-and-blue boats that used to run trips round the bay, and today it handles almost all the scheduled departures.

The three big catamarans. Magic Catamarans runs the classic 5-hour trip (10:00–15:00 or 15:30–20:30) with a swim at Cova Verda and a barbecue at Cala Vella, for €59 with soft drinks and wine included; on board they take cards only, no American Express. Oasis Catamaran, a separate company, boards the Oasis II here (from 09:30, with stand-up paddleboards) and the 22-seat Oasis Blue. Attraction Catamarans leaves at 10:00 for Cala Blava with a buffet and DJ, for €85; it's the biggest boat (licensed for 145 passengers) and needs 48 hours' notice for free cancellation. All three cross to the south-east, to the Cap Enderrocat coast; none goes to Portals Vells. Full comparison in the catamaran in Palma guide and in the reviews of Magic Catamarans, Oasis and Attraction.

Palma Cruises boards everything here: the dolphins trip (3 hours, €55 at the quay or €65 with hotel pick-up, 10% less on its website), the 3-hour cruise with a swim at 11:00 and 14:00 (€27 online) and the 5-hour Day at Sea at 11:00. The exact dolphin departure time is on your ticket: the website and the booking system don't match. See our Palma Cruises review.

Barca Samba, the DJ boat, takes up to 112 passengers. It runs a family trip Thursday to Sunday at 11:00 (from €39.90), while the 19:00 sunset and the 22:30 night trip are for over-18s only. The ticket includes pizza or a buffet and water; the bar is extra.

The ferry to Magaluf run by Cruceros Costa de Calvià leaves the Passeig Marítim every day at 09:30 and 11:00 and returns at 17:00 or 18:00, for €20 (children €10). For €20 you cross half the bay; check the season first, because the operator hasn't published this year's dates. More in boat trips from Palmanova and Magaluf.

Escala Real and Moll Vell: the quay below the Cathedral

The Escala Real is on the Moll de la Llotja, next to the Moll Vell (old quay), at the foot of the Cathedral. It's the quay you can walk to from the old town.

Mallorca City Boat (formerly Cruceros Marco Polo, now run by Sa Calma Boats) runs the 55-minute cruise from here: the Almudaina, the Cathedral, Bellver, the Porto Pi lighthouse, the cruise port and Castell de Sant Carles. It leaves every hour from 11:00 to 17:00, Monday to Saturday, for €19 with a snack and water, with no swim stop. Look for the Marcopolo sign and arrive 10 minutes early. If an old guide says it leaves from the Auditòrium or costs €10, it's out of date; we explain in our Mallorca City Boat review and the timetable is at cityboatmallorca.com.

From the same steps leave the Oasis Lux (maximum 36 people, 10:00 or 15:30, barbecue at Cala Vella) and Sa Calma's Saona catamaran. The boat from Magaluf also lands here on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Club de Mar and Real Club Náutico: private boats

The two sailing clubs are private members' clubs: they host charter companies but don't sell trips at a ticket desk. If you book a private boat with skipper, you'll usually meet at one of them.

Real Club Náutico de Palma (Plaza San Pedro 1), at the western end of the promenade, with restaurants and its own car park. Some llaüts moor by the San Telmo chapel, next to the entrance; one goes for €590 per group (up to 5 people, 5 hours, with a swim at Illetes). Occasional works on the quay sometimes restrict access and parking: check the notices at rcnp.es before driving there. During the regattas, PalmaVela in spring and the Copa del Rey in summer, the berths and car park fill up.

Club de Mar (Muelle de Pelaires), on the west side of the port: more than 500 berths and currently being expanded, with building works. Skippered sailing boats for 7 to 12 people and classic llaüts leave from here. It's the closest point to Illetes: less time sailing, more time in the water.

Getting to the quay: EMT bus, on foot and parking

By bus. EMT line 1 runs the length of the port: Plaça d'Espanya, Avenida Argentina, Passeig Marítim (stops Marquès de la Sènia, Auditòrium and Can Barberà), Club de Mar, Estacions Marítimes 1 to 4 and Dic de l'Oest. For Golondrinas, get off at Auditòrium. A cash ticket costs €2 with no transfer; with a contactless card you pay less. A rise to €3 has been initially approved, with no date yet. Route at emtpalma.cat. Note: line 1 no longer goes to the airport; from there, take the A1 (€5).

On foot. From the Cathedral it's a moment's walk down to the Escala Real. Golondrinas is about 1.5 km west along the promenade: if you're staying in the old town, leave in good time or take line 1. From the hotels on the Passeig Marítim, it's the other way round: Golondrinas is right next door.

By car. Parking on the Passeig Marítim is difficult, more so with works in the area. Magic recommends the pay car park at Marquès de la Sènia, with a line 1 stop outside. No operator publishes parking rates.

How to get to the boarding point

  1. Check the quay on your ticket: Golondrinas/Auditòrium or Escala Real/Lonja.
  2. Golondrinas: EMT line 1 to Auditòrium and cross the avenue.
  3. Escala Real: walk down from the Cathedral towards the sea.
  4. Arrive 10–15 minutes early; Barca Samba closes boarding 5 minutes before sailing.

Hotel pick-up. Palma Cruises has one route through Calvià (from Camp de Mar to Club de Mar, via Magaluf, Palmanova and Illetes) and another from El Arenal to Can Pastilla, for €10 extra per adult. Attraction charges €30 per person; Magic picks up from El Dorado and from Camp de Mar. If you're staying on Playa de Palma, look first at boat trips from El Arenal: you may not need to come into Palma.

Arriving on a cruise ship

Cruise ships berth at Estacions Marítimes 1 to 4 or at the Dic de l'Oest, next to Castell de Sant Carles. Line 1 runs from both to the Auditòrium stop, in front of Golondrinas, with no change. The port's water bus (Bus Nàutic) was awarded, but the company pulled out and it is not running today: the Port Authority will put it out to tender again.

If you arrive early in the morning, Palma Cruises' 14:00 departures or Magic's afternoon trips leave you the morning for the centre. On Saturdays several big ships often coincide and the promenade gets busier. More in the cruise port guide and our page on the port of Palma.

Which boat trip from Palma to choose

Our picks from Palma

1

Families and first-timers

Five hours with lunch and a swim: the bay's classic format, with more than 12,000 reviews and a 4.6.

2

Couples who want fewer people

The premium version to Cueva Verde and Cala Vella, rated 4.7.

3

Short on time or budget

Two and a half hours with snorkelling and a drink, from €35.10.

4

Sunset with music

Three or four hours at sunset with music. If you want calm, Magic's Sunset Bahía is quieter.

To see the Cathedral from the sea, the 55-minute cruise from the Escala Real does the job without eating your day. For a swim you need a boat that crosses to Cala Vella or Cala Blava: allow 3 hours at least. With small children, avoid the Barca Samba afternoon and night trips and compare age rules: Magic charges half price from 7 to 14 and nothing up to 6; Attraction, nothing up to 5.

If you want boat and city on one ticket, the sightseeing bus sells a combo with a 50-minute cruise (April to November, not on Sundays):

Wind, cancellations and what they don't tell you

  • The embat. The south-westerly breeze comes in from midday and peaks around 14:00. In the morning the sea is flatter: if you get seasick, go at 10:00. See weather in Palma.
  • Cancelling. Almost all allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before; Attraction asks for 48 hours and Palma Cruises refunds 100% only with more than 3 days' notice. If a trip is called off for bad weather, each operator applies its own rule: ask before you pay.
  • Drinks. Only Magic includes soft drinks and wine. Oasis includes water and nothing else; on Attraction you pay for everything, even water (€2).
  • Shared coves. Cala Vella and Cueva Verde get several catamarans a day. For more peace, choose a small boat or a sailing boat.
