A buggy tour in Mallorca is a good day on land between two days on the water, and near Palma there are two operators with their own websites and clear prices. The first thing to know: you pay per vehicle, not per person, and the driver needs their original car driving licence. Without it you are not going anywhere, however much you have paid.

Below you will find where the tours start, what each operator charges on its own site compared with the booking platforms, who can drive and what to wear so your evening clothes don't end up covered in dust.

Where buggy and quad tours run in Mallorca

There are two areas near Palma and several more around the island:

  • Son Oms, next to Palma airport. Adventure Tours Mallorca starts here with 2- and 4-seater Polaris RZR 1000 buggies heading inland across the Pla plain. It is the easiest option if you are staying in Palma or Playa de Palma.
  • Santa Ponça, in Calvià. Mallor'Quad runs two quad routes along the west coast: a morning one (meet 10:30, depart 11:00) and a sunset one (16:30 / 17:00). Both last about 3 hours 30, with guides in French, Spanish and English.
  • Elsewhere on the island: the platforms list quad tours in Magaluf, Andratx towards Sant Elm and Alcúdia (with a climb to the Formentor viewpoint), and buggy tours in Cala Ratjada, Cala Millor and Sa Coma.

My advice: if you are staying in Palma, Son Oms is just down the road; if you are in Palmanova or Magaluf, Santa Ponça is next door and the west route follows the coast, with a snorkel mask included.

Buggy and quad prices: operator website vs booking platforms

These are the prices published by the operators themselves. Note that they are per vehicle:

Operator Vehicle Duration Price Includes
Adventure Tours Mallorca 2-seater buggy 3 hrs €240 guide, fuel, third-party liability insurance, radio
Adventure Tours Mallorca 4-seater buggy 3 hrs €300 the same
Mallor'Quad Solo quad 3 hrs 30 €139 fuel, helmet, parking, third-party insurance, snorkel mask
Mallor'Quad Two-up quad 3 hrs 30 €174 the same

On the platforms you will see lower figures: quads from €56 in Magaluf or from €65, buggies from €84 in Cala Millor. Before comparing, check whether the price is per person or per vehicle and how long the tour lasts: 2 hours is not 3 hours 30. Some websites advertise "from €99" or "from €129" for the Santa Ponça quad; the price the operator publishes is the one in the table.

On GetYourGuide there is a 2- or 4-seater buggy tour from Palma starting at €240, the same figure Adventure Tours publishes for its 2-seater buggy. There the platform's advantage is in the terms: with "reserve now, pay later" you are charged 72 hours before, and you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before. More on this in our GetYourGuide review.

Licence and age: who can drive

There is no "buggy without a licence" for adults here. Both operators require a category B (car) licence and are strict about it:

  • Adventure Tours (buggy): driver aged 21 or over, with the original licence. They accept official digital licence apps, but not copies or photos. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, you also need an International Driving Permit. Front passenger from age 12 and 135 cm; in the back, from age 4.
  • Mallor'Quad (quad): driver aged 18 or over, no provisional licences. Passengers from age 7 and 1.30 m.

What about children? Adventure Tours runs a buggy course for children from age 8, and the platforms have a 20-minute kids' buggy from €49.90. If nobody in the family holds a car licence, the alternative is the guided Segway tour, from €60.79.

Buggy, quad or jeep: which to choose

  • Buggy: you drive it with a steering wheel, like a car. Better for families with children, because the 4-seater takes two in the back from age 4. It costs more, but you split it: the 4-seater works out at €75 a head if there are four of you.
  • Quad: steered with handlebars and more physical. The €174 two-up quad works out at €87 per person, and the passenger can be as young as 7.
  • 4x4 jeep: there is a 5-hour self-drive jeep safari from €75.65. It is the relaxed option for anyone who wants dirt tracks and viewpoints without dust in their face.

What to wear and what to bring

The practical list for a summer route on dirt tracks:

  • Clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Dust and, if it has rained, mud. Nothing white.
  • Closed shoes. No flip-flops: you are working pedals and stepping down onto loose ground.
  • Sunglasses and a scarf for the dust if you are on a quad.
  • Swimwear underneath if you are doing Mallor'Quad's west route, which includes a snorkel mask.
  • Sun cream and water, especially on midday routes.
  • The driver's original licence.

A helmet is included on the Mallor'Quad quad. In summer, Mallor'Quad's sunset route avoids the hottest hours.

Insurance, excess and cancellation

The insurance included is third-party liability: it covers damage to others, not to the vehicle. If you damage the buggy or quad, you pay an excess of up to €1,500. With Adventure Tours you can reduce it to €0 for €20 per driver; if you have never driven a buggy before, it is worth it.

Cancellation on the operators' own websites:

  • Adventure Tours: free up to 24 hours before, and a 100% refund if the tour is called off for bad weather.
  • Mallor'Quad: 100% refund up to 48 hours before.

If you want to combine it with the sea, you can do the morning route and a sunset catamaran in Palma on the same day. More one-day plans in day trips from Palma and things to do in Palma. Official websites: buggy-mallorca.com and mallorquad.com.
